Curriculum
Overview
The School’s curriculum is planned to meet the needs of all individuals. It is designed to promote harmony between those of different races, cultures and creeds, and to provide equal opportunities for all, regardless of sex, religion, disability or class. If you would like any further information about the curriculum offer please contact the Headteacher.
Small class sizes mean that we know the children well and can ensure that they are making progress in all areas.
We track all children against their projected target and will give appropriate support to any child who is experiencing difficulties in attaining their target.
Geography and History are taught discretely, but where possible, links are made to other subjects.
EYFS
Our youngest children follow the Early Early Foundation Curriculum which breaks down early development into 7 broad areas. Children are expected to reach their Early Learning Goals in each of the specific areas by the end of the Reception year.
Discrete Learning
We teach PSHE through the Kapow scheme of work, which covers all aspects of personal, social and health education as well as online safety and relationships education.
We teach RE using The Diocese of Peterborough Syllabus (revised in 2024-2029) and Understanding Christianity. At least 50% of our teaching time is dedicated to teaching concepts within Christianity (although these sometimes link to other faiths) and pupils learn for at least 1 hour a week in KS1 and 1 hour 15 minutes in KS2.
We teach PE using the PE Hub schemes of work. Our PE lessons are delivered by a dedicated, qualified coach. Each year we enter the Northamptonshire Sport festival of sport and School Games competitions enabling our pupils to experience competitive and non competitive sporting events with a range of other schools. These include Football, New Age Kurling, Boccia, Athletics and others. All pupils in Upper KS2 have the opportunity to learn to swim until they are proficient to 25m.
We teach French to pupils in Y3 - Y6 using a scheme of work from Kapow.
Music is taught using the Kapow on line scheme of work.
Computing is taught using the 'Purple Mash' online scheme of work. Pupils have access to a wide range of programmes and applications on their platform which enable the progression of their computing skills including coding.

Mathematics
The National Curriculum for Mathematics has 3 core aims:
- Fluency
- Reasoning
- Problem Solving
As a school, we believe that children learn best in maths when concepts are broken down into small, managable steps. We teach using a method that first uses concrete resources to demonstrate a concept, followed by pictorial representations and finally in a more abstract way (known as the CPA approach). We use the White Rose Maths Hub Scheme of Work in order to achieve this.
Our Calculation Policies set out for each year group show the concrete, pictorial and abstract methods we teach for each of the four claculations.

English and Phonics
We place the highest importance on the successful development of literacy skills. Our curriculum caters for English teaching and development of reading, writing and speaking and listening is through our topics.
Reading
We believe that every child can be a good reader and we teach them the skills to be able to acheve this. Reading comprehension is supported by practising strategies to uncover meaning in texts. As part of our reading lessons, we ensure children of all ages practise these strategies and are able to access, explore and respond to increasingly more challenging texts. As part of the teaching of reading, we explicitly teach and model the following key reading strategies outlined in the National Curriculum to ensure that children use the strategies which prompt the comprehension process and can apply them effectively in their own reading across the curriculum:
- Using background knowledge to understand text
- Predicting
- Understanding vocabulary: developing strategies for this including recognising which vocabulary they don't understand
- Asking questions and “wondering” about the text
- Visualising
- Developing inference
Some of the above key reading strategies are also taught through the reading domains approach:
- Vocabulary (and grammar – linguistic knowledge)
- Inference
- Prediction
- Explanation
- Retrieval
- Summarising (KS2) / Sequencing (KS1).
We encourage the love of reading throughout our school through the use of Reading Buddies, this is where our Year 6 children are paired with a reader from Year 1, 2 and 3 and each week spend time listening to their buddy read. We also have a dedicated reading cabin which is available to be used throughout the school day. Once a half term, all children participate in Performance Poery, they share their performances in a whole school assembly. In addition to this, each half term, children sign up to listen to different genres of writing read by all members of our school staff. Please see our current Reading Intent below.
Phonics
We use the Read, Write, Inc. systematic synthetic phonics program at our school.
The program teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and 'tricky' words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases. This link will show you how to say the sounds:
Writing
Writing units are carefully mapped out throughout the year to ensure that children learn how to confidently compose a range of genres. Much of the writing that we teach is driven by either a key text or by topics that we are delivering in our wider curriculum. Through shared writing, the children look at the technical features of a text and learn how to use aspects of grammar in context. After the shared write, the children plan, draft and complete final pieces of independent writing.
There are no documents to display at present.
